John The Son Of Zebedee
John was unmarried and lived with his parents at Bethsaida. Several years after the martyrdom of James, John married his brother's widow. John was a fisherman and worked with his brother James in partnership with Andrew and Simon Peter.
John was around twenty-four when Jesus Christ called him to be "fishers of men." He was mending nets with His father and brother James at the time that Jesus Christ called him to be his disciple. John was known as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." John was also one of the two who did not abandon our Lord when he went to the cross. Our Lord asked John to care for his mother since he would not be able to after he ascended into heaven. (John 19:26-27) John cared for Jesus's mother (Mary) until her death. After Christ's ascension John traveled and wrote the books John, I John, II John , and III John. the time that these books were written is not known. When in temporary exile on the island of Patmos, John wrote the book of Revelation.
During the last twenty years of John's life he was cared for by his granddaughter. Eventually he died a natural death at Ephesus in A.D. 103, when he was one hundred and one years old. He was the last of the disciples to die, and the only one to die a natural death.
