The Twelve Disciples of Jesus Christ (Part 7)
Matthew
Matthew was married with four children. Before he come to Christ he was a man of some wealth. He lived in Capernaum, and was a tax collector there. Matthew is also known as Levi. Matthew's Fathers name was Alpheus.
Christ called Matthew while he was at a tax table. (Matthew 9:9, Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27-28) After the Pentecost, Matthew went and preached in Parhia, Syria, Cappadocia, Galatia, Bithynia, Thrace, and Lysimachia.
Matthew has two versions for his death. First: is that while he was preaching in Ethiopia he was chopped apart by a halberd.* Second: is that after converting many people in Egypt to faith. The Pharaoh of Egypt (Hircanus) sent someone to kill him with spear while Matthew was preaching.
*The meaning of halberd: A long-handled, as-like military weapon in various forms, used in the 15th and 16th centuries. (As seen below) Taken from the New Century Dictionary.
