The Twelve disciples Of Jesus Christ (Part 11)
Simon The Canaanite
Simon the Canaanite is also known as Simon the Zealot. For those who may not know what a zealot is I will explain. A zealot (in the time of Simon) were radical Jews seeking to over throw Rome. Or as taken from the New Century Dictionary: ... One of a fanatical Jewish sect of Palestine under Roman dominion, who were excessively zealous in behalf of the Mosaic law. Simon lived with his family in Capernaum. He had been a merchant in Capernaum before he turned his entire attention to the patriotic organization of the Zealots. To my knowledge he never married.
Simon was around twenty-eight years old when he joined the disciples. Not a lot is said about him in the Bible. He was at the Pentecost. And after the persecutions drove him out of Jerusalem he went and preached in Great Britain. He also preached in Mauritania and Alexandria. Then he worked his way up the Nile and went into the heart of Africa. Everywhere he went he preached the Gospel.
It is said that Simon was quite old when he died. He was crucified somewhere in the heart of Africa. He was killed during the reign of the Roman emperor Trajan.
